Insurance renewals are about more than the equipment a trucking company owns. Underwriters also look at the loss experience and safety practices behind the operation. A new FreightWaves report offers a useful example of how one fleet is building a clearer safety record with technology and coaching.
FreightWaves reported that Midwest less-than-truckload carrier Dohrn completed a fleetwide move to dual-facing event recorders about a year ago. Dohrn President and CEO Robert Howard said the company has since seen an almost 20 percent reduction in accidents. He described the cameras as one part of a broader effort to use technology, coaching, and newer equipment to operate as safely as possible.
The practical takeaway for owner-operators and small fleets is not simply to buy a camera and expect an insurance discount. No single device guarantees a particular premium or underwriting result. The stronger lesson is to own and organize usable safety data. Document driver coaching, clean inspections, corrective action, maintenance trends, and what happened when an incident occurred. That record can help a carrier understand its risks and explain its operation more clearly during an insurance review.
Camera footage can also provide context after a crash. According to the report, Dohrn found that outward-facing footage often helped establish what occurred and, in many cases, supported its drivers. Technology works best when it is paired with fair coaching, written procedures, driver communication, and consistent follow-through.
For trucking businesses, a credible safety story is built over time. Review trends regularly, correct risky behavior quickly, and keep the records that show what changed.
