Truck insurance for Georgia haulers

Georgia trucking runs through the Port of Savannah, Atlanta’s I-285 interchanges and the I-75 corridor, and the state rewrote its truck lawsuit rules in 2024 and 2025. We quote Georgia owner-operators, new authorities and fleets by phone, email and online from our office in Vancouver, Washington, in English, Russian, Ukrainian or Romanian.

GIMC registration and USDOT-GA numbers

  • GIMC registration. Intrastate carriers running a vehicle of 10,001 lb or more, more than 10 passengers or placarded hazmat must register each year with the Department of Public Safety. It’s $5 per vehicle on time or $25 late, and the registration runs January 1 to December 31.[1][2]
  • Form E for for-hire carriers. For-hire applicants also need a Form E, filed by the insurance company, not the agent.[2]
  • USDOT-GA. Carriers operating only in Georgia with a vehicle over 10,000 lb need a USDOT number shown on the power unit as “USDOT” followed by the number and “GA,” with the carrier’s name.[3]
  • Household goods movers need a DPS certificate and file $100,000/$300,000/$50,000 of liability on a Form E and $25,000 per vehicle ($50,000 aggregate) of cargo on a Form H.[4][5]

How much liability? DPS sets intrastate amounts by rule and says it doesn’t intend to impose federal limits on intrastate carriers not otherwise subject to them.[6] Interstate for-hire trucks need the federal $750,000, and most brokers ask for $1,000,000.

Georgia’s 2024 and 2025 lawsuit changes

  • Direct action narrowed (2024). For claims arising from July 1, 2024, an injured person can sue a motor carrier’s insurer directly only if the carrier is insolvent or bankrupt, or the driver or carrier can’t be served.[7]
  • SB 68 (2025). Lawyers can argue a dollar figure for pain and suffering only after the evidence closes, any party can demand that fault be tried before damages (unless the claim is under $150,000), and not wearing a seatbelt can now be used as evidence.[8]
  • Medical bills. For claims arising from April 21, 2025, medical damages are limited to the reasonable value of necessary care, and juries can see both billed and paid amounts.[8]

These changes make Georgia truck claims more predictable than a few years ago, but Atlanta traffic and port volumes keep crash exposure high.

Fuel tax and the 2026 suspensions

  • Diesel tax is 37.3 cents a gallon for 2026.[9]
  • Suspended again. Collection has been suspended three times in 2026, most recently from September 29 to October 29, 2026, unless renewed.[10]
  • IFTA and IRP. IFTA decals cost $3 a set and must be displayed by March 1[11], and IRP registration is online only through DOR’s Georgia Trucking Portal.[12]

Weights, variances and permits

  • Standard limits. 80,000 lb gross, 20,340 lb single axle, and 34,000 lb tandem on Interstates for heavier or longer combinations. County roads are limited to 56,000 lb except for pickups and deliveries.[13]
  • Farm and forest loads. Off the Interstate, forest products, live poultry, cotton, feed, aggregates, fresh concrete and similar loads can run 23,000 lb single and 46,000 lb tandem, with a 5% variance within 100 miles of origin and a 10% variance within 150 miles outside nonattainment areas for certified equipment.[14] A 2025 law made the 10% variance permanent.[15]
  • Emergency order. From September 29 to October 29, 2026, emergency-related loads may run up to 95,000 lb on 5 axles on state roads (not Interstates) with a DPS permit; posted bridge limits still apply.[16]
  • Permits. A standard single-trip oversize permit is $30 and an annual permit $150.[17]

Lanes, express lanes and speed

  • Right two lanes. Trucks with more than six wheels must use the two right lanes on roads with three or more lanes in one direction.[18]
  • No through trucks in downtown Atlanta. Through trucks are prohibited on I-75/I-85 inside I-285.[19]
  • Express lanes. Peach Pass express lanes don’t allow tractor-trailers or vehicles with trailers.[20]
  • I-75 truck lanes. GDOT’s planned northbound truck-only lanes from Macon toward McDonough were still in development in April 2026, with no procurement date.[21]
  • Speed. 70 mph on Interstates where posted, with no separate truck limit.[22]

Drivers

  • Safety rules. Georgia adopts the federal safety rules as of January 1, 2025[23] and applies them to intrastate carriers. Intrastate drivers may be 18, and the farm hours exemption applies all year.[6]
  • English proficiency. Since June 25, 2025, troopers place drivers out of service if they fail the roadside English proficiency test.[24] DPS’s enforcement division was renamed Commercial Vehicle Enforcement on July 1, 2025.[25]
  • Non-domiciled CDLs are limited to H-2A, H-2B and E-2 visa holders.[26]

Georgia freight

The Port of Savannah handled 5.67 million TEUs in fiscal 2026.[27] Its Appalachian Regional Port in Murray County links to Savannah by a 388-mile CSX rail route[28], and the Gainesville Inland Port has been fully operating since May 2026.[29] Trucks carried 83% of Georgia’s freight tonnage in 2019[19], and ATRI’s 2026 list ranks I-285 at I-85 North the country’s third-worst truck bottleneck.[30] Georgia produced 1.3 billion broilers in 2025[31], and its forest industry has a $42 billion impact.[32]

Frequently asked questions

Limits on arguing dollar figures, the right to try fault before damages, seatbelt evidence, and medical damages limited to the reasonable value of care.[8]

Can tractor-trailers use Georgia’s express lanes?

No. Peach Pass express lanes don’t allow tractor-trailers or vehicles with trailers.[20]
